Military history is often told through dates, conflicts, units, medals, and missions. But behind every record is a human experience.

United Military's Stories of Service initiative preserves the personal side of military service through the voices and experiences of veterans, active-duty service members, and military families.

These stories can include service and sacrifice, but they can also include leadership, friendship, family, transition, purpose, resilience, humor, loss, opportunity, and life after the uniform.

STORY OF SERVICE

Veteran U.S. Army National Guard

Joshua Stai: Service Was Only the Beginning

Joshua Stai served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1999 to 2004 as a 19K Armored Crewman with the 34th Infantry in Minnesota. His service aboard the M1A1 Abrams helped shape the values, discipline, and sense of purpose he continues to carry into his life as a veteran advocate, entrepreneur, songwriter, and music producer.

Today, Joshua remains committed to supporting fellow veterans and their families, building businesses, creating music, and carrying forward a family legacy of military service. He believes that serving in uniform was only the beginning of a lifelong responsibility to keep showing up for others.

Whose stories does United Military publish?

United Military focuses on stories connected to veterans, active-duty service members, military families, caregivers, and others whose experiences are meaningfully connected to military service.

How can someone submit a story?

Start by submitting a nomination through the United Military Nominate a Hero process. Tell us who the person is and why their story deserves recognition.

Does every nomination become a published story?

No. Each nomination is reviewed individually, and submission does not guarantee publication or selection for a recognition feature.

Can military family stories be featured?

Yes. Military family experiences are an important part of the broader story of military service.

Does someone need to share combat experiences?

No. Stories of Service can include many aspects of military life, including leadership, family, friendship, career, transition, community, legacy, and life after service.

Can someone request that personal details remain private?

United Military believes personal stories should be handled thoughtfully. Sensitive or unnecessary personal information should not be submitted, and appropriate participation and permission should be considered before information is published.
