UNITED MILITARY RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Veteran Recognition

Community members can nominate veterans and service members whose stories deserve to be recognized and preserved.

There is no cost to submit a nomination.

RECOGNIZING SERVICE

Every Veteran Has a Story Worth Remembering

Service records can document dates, assignments, ranks, and accomplishments. They cannot fully capture the personal experiences behind those facts.

United Military's Veteran Recognition program gives families, friends, fellow service members, and community members a way to introduce us to veterans whose stories deserve to be preserved.

Recognition can focus on military service, but it can also include leadership, resilience, family, transition, community contribution, lessons learned, and the life that followed the uniform.

Recognition Begins With a Nomination

You do not need to know every detail of someone's military career. A meaningful nomination simply helps us understand who they are, why their experience matters, and why their story deserves to be remembered.

WHO WE RECOGNIZE

Service Takes Many Forms

United Military welcomes nominations representing different generations, branches, roles, service experiences, and chapters of military life.

01

Veterans

Former service members from different generations and branches whose experiences deserve recognition and preservation.

02

Active-Duty Service Members

Men and women currently serving whose commitment, leadership, or experience has made an impact on the people around them.

03

Reserve & Guard Members

Members of reserve components and the National Guard whose service has shaped their families, careers, and communities.

04

Veterans Across Generations

Stories from earlier generations of service are especially important to preserve before memories and firsthand accounts are lost with time.

WHY RECOGNITION MATTERS

A Service Record Cannot Tell the Whole Story

A person's years in uniform may represent only one chapter of their life, but the experiences from that chapter can influence everything that follows.

Recognition helps preserve the human experiences behind military service and gives families and communities a way to better understand the people who served.

Preserve Personal History

Help ensure important memories and firsthand experiences are not lost with time.

Recognize the Individual

Look beyond the uniform to the person, family, and experiences behind military service.

Connect Families

Give children, grandchildren, relatives, and loved ones another way to understand a family's military history.

Strengthen Community Awareness

Help neighbors and communities better understand the people among them who have served.

HOW RECOGNITION WORKS

From Nomination to Recognition

Every story begins with someone deciding that a veteran or service member's experience deserves to be remembered.

01

Nominate

Submit information about the veteran or service member and tell us why their story deserves recognition.

02

Review

United Military reviews the nomination and determines whether additional information may be helpful.

03

Connect

When appropriate, we may contact the nominator or nominee to learn more about the experiences behind the submission.

04

Preserve

With appropriate participation and permission, selected experiences may become United Military Stories of Service.

STORIES WE PRESERVE

Recognition Goes Beyond Where Someone Served

Military experiences are complex and personal. United Military seeks to preserve stories that help future generations understand the people behind the service.

Service & Sacrifice

Personal experiences connected to training, assignments, deployments, responsibilities, and the sacrifices made during military service.

Leadership & Brotherhood

Stories about leadership, mentorship, teamwork, friendship, and relationships formed through service.

Transition & Life After Service

Experiences involving retirement, career, family, community, identity, purpose, and the transition into civilian life.

Legacy & Family History

Stories that preserve military traditions, family memories, lessons, and experiences that can be passed to future generations.
